Okoto And Sasuke 1935
- 100 minutes
Tanizaki Junichiro's novella has been adapted for the screen six times already, but many consider Shimazu's version (the first) to be the best. This period piece concerns the profound love between a wealthy blind woman and her loyal manservant. A talented musician, Okoto gives lessons in koto and shamisen, but her pride keeps most others - particularly men - at a distance. Most of the time it is just she and her servant Sasuke in the house. And the dedicated Sasuke dreams that some day, she will return his love.
