On The Way To School 2008
Plot Synopsis
A recently graduated teacher is sent to Turkish Kurdistan in the southeastern corner of the country to teach Turkish at a village school. However, the teacher, who doesn't speak Kurdish, quickly discovers that his students don't speak a word of Turkish. Unable to do his job, the teacher feels like an exile in his own country as he tries desperately to communicate with his students. Filmed over the course of a year, Orhan Eskikoy and Ozgur Dogan's documentary traces the teacher and the students' efforts to understand one another while subtly highlighting the problems with the Turkish government's indoctrination policy towards the traditionally Kurdishdominated region.
