Former war hero Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy) is the golden boy of Russia's infamous secret police. But doing the state's dirtiest and most brutal work takes a major toll, especially when he must investigate the brutal murder of his own godson. Despite his misgivings, Leo enforces the party line, insisting the death was an accident. His beloved wife Raisa (Noomi Rapace) is a Western sympathiser - based on a confession extorted by his envious colleague Vasili. Crushed but refusing to denounce Raisa, Leo is demoted and the couple is banished to toil in degrading poverty miles outside of Moscow.
While they are there, more children's bodies appear along the town's train tracks. Leo begs his new boss, General Nesterov (Gary Oldman), to allow him to investigate the deaths as murders. Leo's quest to expose the serial murderer culminates in a nail-biting cat-and-mouse game, as the lovers struggle to catch the killer before Vasili and his thugs can catch them.
