Ghost in the Shell:
All Anime Exhibition
1995-2026
Retrospective
What would be best to describe a soul/ghost reincarnated into a body/shell?
Ever since Masamune Shirow first mapped the boundaries of the cybernetic soul, Ghost in the Shell has continuously evolved across generations of landmark cinematic and broadcast milestones. On the precipice of its next major matrix shift - the highly anticipated Science SARU anime adaptation premiering July 7 - Tokyo Node opened its gates to a definitive, all-anime retrospective this Spring. Suspended forty-five floors above the metropolis, here is our field log from inside the network.
NODE: The Nerve Net Interface
The entrance, “NODE”, plunges observers directly into the data stream. Physical cables intertwine with glowing generative LED arrays, simulating a direct neural uplink. The installation manifests the vast, interconnected network that defines the franchise's philosophical core.
The installation is surrounded by consoles where attendees can interact and explore its intricate connections and characters between different iterations of the series.

DIG: Unearthing the Archive
Titled “DIG”, this expansive sector exhumes the production history across all media vectors - from Mamoru Oshii's 1995 theatrical [ FILM ] Ghost in the Shell to Kamiyama's [ TVA ] Stand Alone Complex. Massive acrylic walls suspend thousands of production layouts in racks and mid-air. Key exhibits include the original hand-drawn animation cels of Motoko Kusanagi's iconic tactical dive, proving the analog labour behind the digital world.

VISION: AR experience, The Laughing Man Override & Cybernetic Cloak
The exhibition transcends passive observation by deploying the “VISION” AR application with AR-enabled glasses. By booking online in advance, visitors receive a handheld device attached to the glasses that allows them to scan structural markers or artworks scattered throughout the node to trigger hidden digital assets.
Another highlight is the interactive surveillance grid. Stepping into the camera feed triggers real-time facial obstruction - overlaying the iconic “Laughing Man” logo directly onto your live feed.
The “Cybernetic Cloak” installation (seen in the next section) simulates the active camouflage technology from the series. A dynamic array of LED panels responds to motion and light, creating a mesmerising display of shifting patterns that mimic invisibility in real-time.
An interactive installation bridges official merchandise with augmented reality, letting visitors view the gallery through a cybernetic lens. While sampling a collection of Ghost in the Shell graphic tees, guests can activate an AR display that applies the signature visual distortions seen throughout the anime that makes you invisible.

Ghost/Shell: Transending Imaginery and Reality
Scarttered across the exhibition are several installations that materialise the franchise's most iconic cybernetic technologies. Each installation is designed to evoke a sense of wonder and unease, blurring the line between human and machine in true Ghost in the Shell fashion.

Think Tanks: Life-size Mechanics
No exhibition of Section 9's arsenal is complete without the multiped think tanks. The gallery features stunning life-size scale replicas of the franchise's beloved AI units. The iconic blue Tachikoma from [ TVA ] Stand Alone Complex and the red Logicoma from the [ OVA ] Arise series anchor the mechanical design showcase.

Merchandise: Ghost in the Culture
The exhibition's final section is a meticulously curated gift shop that offers an array of exclusive merchandise, from limited-edition art prints and apparel to high-end collectibles. Each item is designed to capture the essence of the Ghost in the Shell universe, allowing fans to take a piece of the experience home with them.
