Released at the same time as Andrzej Wajda's more explicitly political Man of Marble, this subtle, symbol-laden work is nevertheless just as effective. The setting is a linguistics competition that takes place during a Polish university's summer session. Jaroslaw, an idealistic young teacher, befriends a cynical, older professor. Their relationship becomes fascinatingly complex as their ethical differences simmer into arguments.
