Timbuktu

Stripped of many freedoms - singing, playing, modes of dress - the people of this ancient Malian city contend with the imposed fundamentalist doctrine without losing their spirit. At the centre of the film's intertwined tales is a Tuareg patriarch, who is forced to face radical Sharia law for an accidental misdeed. Richly perspicacious, Timbuktu is a rousing call for a more open, tolerant world.
