Starring the leading lady of Knocked Up, Katherine Heigl, 27 Dresses is a briskly paced romantic vignette. This marks Anne Fletcher's second directorial effort, with a screenplay penned by The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, utilising a fresh premise to explore modern women's values regarding marriage. The protagonist, Jane, has always yearned for weddings. Whilst organising the nuptials for her own sister and the boss she secretly harbours a crush on, she encounters wedding columnist Kevin, a meeting that fosters her personal growth and alters her perspective on love.
The director cast the recent rom-com sensation Katherine in the lead role; paired with a light-hearted plot, this ensures the film is highly entertaining. The screenwriter’s well-placed humour, combined with the unpretentious acting of the leads, delivers plenty of laughs. Regrettably, apart from the unique character design of the heroine, the film lacks other standout features to prop it up, rendering it merely a standard romantic flick.
