American Gangster [2007]

Hero

Based on a true story and set against the backdrop of 1960s and 70s New York City, American Gangster chronicles the rise and fall of the heroin empire built single-handedly by the legendary Harlem drug lord, Frank Lucas. It was a chaotic era marked by the Vietnam War and rampant corruption across various departments, particularly within the police force. Following the sudden death of his boss, Lucas begins his ascent, bribing the US military to successfully smuggle the highest purity "Number 4" heroin from Thailand using warplanes. He creates his own brand, "Blue Magic", which becomes the best-selling drug in Harlem—even his arch-rival Nicky Barnes has to buy stock from him. Surpassing the Italian Mafia and the French Connection, Frank Lucas completely dominates the drug market of the time. However, one cannot press one's luck forever; he eventually crosses paths with Richie Roberts, an incorruptible detective who hates evil with a passion. Under Roberts' relentless investigation and crackdown, Lucas is finally brought to justice. The two eventually join forces to purge the corrupt officers of the time, forcing the ringleader, Detective Trupo, down the road of no return towards suicide.

Denzel Washington's brilliant performance brings the legend of Frank Lucas to life once more. Washington vividly portrays the character's cruel, volatile, and courageous nature, alongside his deep dedication to family. Although there remains a distance between his acting and that of Robert De Niro, his explosive power is compelling, fully exhibiting the commanding aura a boss should possess and proving that a black-led gangster film can carry just as much weight. Russell Crowe is also a surprise as Detective Richie Roberts; contrary to his usual fiery image, he plays a clean cop who is calm, a bit of a womaniser, and full of a sense of justice. Despite being isolated by the force and treated with disdain by his colleagues, he persists in his principles, commanding a degree of respect. Although they walk different paths, both men are highly principled and goal-oriented with distinct personalities. It is no wonder that when they finally meet, despite coming from two different worlds, they share a mutual appreciation—game recognises game.
