Godzilla Vs. Kong

Published Published almost 3 years ago by Leslie Cheung

With Godzilla vs. Kong, the MonsterVerse franchise pitted the titans of East and West. However, if you are Team Godzilla, you may be disappointed, as GvK is Kong-centric film, or to put it aptly, Kong: Journey To The Center Of The Earth.

Unlike previous entries of MonsterVerse, GvK dials up the goofy meter making it feels like the later entries of Showa Period Toho Godzilla films. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but it feels at odds in the setting of MonsterVerse, which is more serious and grounded and gone are the military factor, like all militaries are missing from the battle of Hong Kong (maybe this is due to the current political tension climate). Maybe the licence for Godzilla appearing in MonsterVerse is uncertain, the film is also missing its usual mythology building set-up.

Visually, it is an art-piece, the titan battles are well done and some scenes are like you are on a theme-park ride. Plot wise, let's just say it's a no-brainer giant monster sci-fi action film. The ending, on the other hand, is a bit rushed and does not give you time to take in the outcome of the final battle. One thing the film got it 100% right is, Hong Kongers can still go into meetings in the building while a titan monster fight is going on next to us.
