At fifteen, Adele (Adèle Exarchopolous) doesn’t question it: girls go out with boys. Her life is changed forever when she meets and connects with the young blue-haired Emma (Léa Seydoux) at a lesbian bar. Adele falls for Emma despite being ridiculed by her gay-bashing friends. Adele immediately finds herself in a passionate relationship and develops an intense sexual bonding with Emma. When they both become committed and live together, social class differences begin to emerge. Adele grows, seeks herself, loses herself and finds herself again.
