In 1999, Southeast Asia's first fiber-optic cable was laid across Cambodia, stretching from one border of the war-torn country to the other. The difficult project provided low-paying jobs for the impoverished locals, and Rithy Panh and his documentary crew followed the workers for four months as they dug trenches through miles of ruined earth - and through history, collective memory, rusting instruments of war and forgotten human remains.
