Violette focuses on Violette Leduc, a writer and peer of Simone de Beauvoir who never achieved de Beauvoir's renown. Chronicling her tumultuous life in step with one of Leduc's books or a significant person or place in her life, this unconventional biopic is nonetheless a finely observed, nuanced and sensitive examination of how poverty, sexuality and psychology shaped both the artist and the woman Leduc was.
