For a new generation of Pink Floyd fans like myself, Roger Waters' performance in Hong Kong was a highly anticipated event, particularly because he was set to perform the entire The Dark Side Of The Moon.
The show opened with "In The Flesh", accompanied by stunning pyrotechnics that instantly mesmerised the entire audience. The first set included Roger's representative works from the Pink Floyd era, alongside just two tracks from his solo career. It was evident that he felt more confident with the Pink Floyd material, which is, of course, more familiar to the crowd. The various stage props and effects left the audience in awe, allowing us to appreciate Roger's dedication to the music. The flying pig and the astronaut left the deepest impression. The first set concluded with "Sheep", and after a break of ten minutes or so, the eagerly awaited second set—The Dark Side Of The Moon—was ready to begin.
A round moon slowly appeared on the video screen, quietly ushering in the second part: The Dark Side Of The Moon. Although most of the audience holds a deep sentimental attachment to this album, with only Roger on stage—minus David Gilmour, Rick Wright, and Nick Mason—one could not help but feel that the dark side of the moon was not quite complete. Furthermore, without the other Pink Floyd members, the music felt somewhat constrained, never quite reaching its full potential. However, being able to hear Roger sing "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse" live was undeniably moving.
The encore section consisted entirely of works from The Wall. The mass singalong of "Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)" and the gripping "Comfortably Numb" brought the evening to its climax. Roger's live performance was unforgettable, leaving everyone hoping that one day (however slim the chances may be) Pink Floyd might reunite for a performance in Hong Kong.
