Bandai Namco Filmworks has officially announced that the new television anime series, The Ghost in the Shell (Japanese title: 攻殻機動隊 THE GHOST IN THE SHELL), will premiere globally on July 7, 2026. Produced by the visionary studio Science SARU, the series is set to debut its first two episodes at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June before its television broadcast.
The new series is described as a reboot that leans into a "retro-futuristic" aesthetic, faithfully recreating several iconic panels from Masamune Shirow’s original manga. The plot centres on Major Motoko Kusanagi and Public Security Section 9 as they investigate a mysterious hacker known as the "Puppet Master" (人形使い). While favourite characters like Batou, Togusa, and the Fuchikoma AI tanks are confirmed to return, the new voice of Motoko Kusanagi remains a secret following the passing of legendary voice actress Atsuko Tanaka in 2024.
