In a happy suburban neighbourhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbours, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!). Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.

Asako (Kie Kitano) and Miharu (Anne Watanabe) are average students at a female high school. One day, Miharu decides to drop out of school due to parental problems. Miharu lends Asako a CD of her favourite indie rock band LANDS. Asako loves the CD and fast becomes a fan of the band, especially guitarist Yukiya (Kengo Kora). The girls then sneak into the backstage area during a LANDS concert at club. Asako meets LANDS members Kenji (Hideyuki Kasahara), Ryuji (Nobuaki Kaneko), and vocalist Natsu (Jin Akanishi). Natsu is immediately attracted to Asako and invites her to their studio for practice sessions. The band manager, Yukari (Ayumi Ito), soon kicks Asako out, but Natsu is determined to keep her around. When band manager Yukari becomes sick, the LANDS members already fond of Asako, call Asako to take of Yukari. The two women fast become friends and Asako soon becomes LANDS co-manager. As the band starts climbing the ladder to stardom, friction starts to occur among the band...

The setting for their story is Sporks, Washington, where something very strange is going on. Located in the conveniently misty woods of the Pacific Northwest, Sporks is a small town getting smaller by the day thanks to its rapidly diminishing population. Worried locals are clueless as to the cause of recent mutilations, the latest being Fisherman Sculley, who is found murdered with his blood drained and multiple bite wounds on his neck. Then again, they're oblivious to just about everything… which is why it strikes no one as odd that a local liquor store advertises "Ice Cold Blood - AB Positive 6 Packs On Sale"; a homeless man holds a sign that reads "Will work for blood"; Vinny's pizzeria features food that is "Hot, Fresh and Garlic Free"; and the local dental office signage features a picture of a smiling mouth, complete with a set of fangs.

The film begins with the departure of Kai's girlfriend Faye. He parks himself in a bookstore to learn French the stingy way, and catches the eye of shop assistant Susie.
