Ready Player One

Published Published about 6 years ago by Leslie Cheung

It has been quite some time for director Steven Spielberg to give us something that is so much fun to watch in his adaptation of Ernest Cline's Ready Player One. Set in 2045, Ready Player One tells a story of a young boy Wade (Tye Sheridan) along with his friends trying to find the Easter Egg in a VR game world called OASIS. The egg is hidden by the world's creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance), and whoever finds it will inherit the ownership of OASIS. With an evil corporation on one side, and young rebels on the other, Ready Player One is a happy thrill ride with non-stop easter eggs and compelling visual that reminds you of classic Spielberg like E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones. The bonding of the young actors also carries great chemistry in this adventure.

Some may say there is no good film adaptation of video games, but Ready Player One is the closest we can get. Non-stop actions, getting the clan together, solving puzzles with clues and tons of pop culture references, this is a big "thank you" to the pop culture fan boys and girls. There are so many "wow" moments in it, like The Shining game as one of the many puzzles, or the appearance of Mechagodzilla versus The Iron Giant and MS Gundam RX-78-2. It may require several repeat watchings to pick up most of the easter eggs and references, but Ready Player One gives much more fun out of each rewatch.
